Valencia Flood Response
Emergency Design Studio
This project is a set of guidelines and design proposals to adapt to flood risk in Horta Sud, Valencia, in response to the Dana flood of 2024. This project analysed the impact of the flood to determine typologies and areas that were the most impacted, and suggested adaptive design proposals to ensure safety in future events.
First, this proposal focuses on low rise housing typologies, which are highly vulnerable to flooding, as well as suggesting larger scale interventions for mid-rise multifamily housing. As many were displaced due to the initial floods, this project suggests new social housing developments in less vulnerable parts of the urban fabric, designed with flood-resilient principles and community amenities such as shops, health centers, and emergency response units.
The second phase of this proposal connects this new housing development across the riverbed with a pedestrian bridge, which provides much needed connectivity between the two sides of the city. This bridge also connects to a newly renovated community facility, which includes new design adaptations so that it can be a place of refuge in emergency and an everyday place of gathering.
This layered approach takes into consideration different configurations of the urban fabric and the population to integrate a series of patterns which reinforce safety options in the area. Through developing interconnected areas for residents to find safety, a larger net is spread to ensure preparedness among the community.
