Cotton of Al-Fayoum

Extractive Territory Studio

The heritage of the Nile region is strongly linked to its productivity as a territory, and cotton holds a strong legacy in the Al-Fayoum region as a high quality crop grown with expertise. However, the territorial impacts of this expansive industry are complex, leading to unusual and strategic relationships between inhabitants of the territory and the process of extraction.

Through dissecting the layers of the territory in Al-Fayoum, four elements of organization become visible. The agricultural plots are the base of the territory, covering the majority of land and providing structure for additional layers, but with an ephemeral element of frequent turnover and evolution. The primary organizer of the territory is the canals, which are one of the oldest elements and the most vital to the operation of industry in the area. The system of irrigation is what enables the system of extraction, and, as a result, enables the following layers of urbanization. The network of roads frequently follow existing canals, extending infrastructure along the same paths. The primary highways also act as key elements of the system of extraction, providing routes for raw cotton to move through the territory. The final layer of the territory is the urbanization and settlement, which primarily grows in conjunction with the organization of the previous layers.

Through these relationships, a constellation of settlement appears in the Al-Fayoum oasis, guided by reciprocal relationship with productive extraction from the territory.
